I'm a sucker for this

Bowie was still Davie Jones from Bromley when the two first met in the offices of a talent scout in 1964. Bolan was plain Mark Feld, a mod from East London. Bowie was nearly 18 years old, Bolan not quite 17.

Each had been striving since boyhood to make it in the music business, experimenting with sounds and styles. The attraction was instant and the friendship endured.
‘There was always a certain rivalry,’ says Keith Altham. ‘But they were very close. They had what they had between them, they didn’t have to prove it to anybody else.
‘There was a real love there. They were very similar, in so many ways. They could have been brothers.’

Marc’s envy of David’s personal relationship with Visconti boiled over into rage and rudeness when the two singers recorded together on Bowie’s The Prettiest Stars.
The two stars had been close enough to inspire persistent rumours that David Bowie was godfather to Rolan, Marc Bolan’s son. Rolan was just a toddler when his mother, American singer Gloria Jones, lost control of the Mini 1275 GT in which Marc died. The rumour is not true. But it says much that, on his own initiative, Bowie did invest in a fund for the boy enabling Rolan and his mother to survive, after Marc’s estate had been frozen, his fortune having disappeared.
Tony Visconti:
“David always adored him.”
Yet it was Bolan who behaved in a conflicted way towards Bowie. He offered Bowie a support slot on a Tyrannosaurus Rex gig, but then instructed David that he could not sing.

Tony Visconti:
“David never saw him as a rival as much as Marc saw him as a rival”
Marc about David in 1973:
“I don’t consider David to be even remotely near big enough to give me any competition. I don’t think that David has anywhere near the charisma or balls that I have. He’s not gonna make it, in any sort of way.”
вот же стерва. that was not nice at all, Marc
Visconti considers that Bolan was totally obsessed by his rivalry with Bowie.
Bowie attended the Marc's funeral visibly upset both by the circumstances and by the unwanted attention of fans, who harassed him.
At the funeral, David wept. This was uncomplicated. He had lost a great friend.
David Bowie: “He was fabulous, one of the funniest guys I’ve ever met. We would be on the floor rolling with laughter most of the time. I really miss him. He was stellar.”
this is so touching

Producer Tony Visconti reveals that Marc Bolan and David Bowie were almost forming their own supergroup until Marc's wife didn't allow him to collaborate with Bowie.
Marc Bolan and David Bowie would have been bandmates had it not been for the T-Rex star's wife, who disliked her husband's musical pal. Legendary producer Tony Visconti has revealed Bowie and Bolan worked together in the late 1960s and came very close to forming their own supergroup.
He tells Spinner.com, "All I wanted to do was promote Marc as an electric guitarist; I thought it would have been a great coup to have him play on David's record. David was extremely happy to have Marc play on the record. After Marc had played this brilliant solo... (Bolan's wife) June just sniped at David, 'He's too good for you! He shouldn't play on your music!' and she dragged Marc out. It was one of the few times that I saw him at a loss for words."
"Marc just wanted to be a star; this was like the carpet was pulled out from under him. If Bowie had asked him to join the band, he probably would have." Instead the two became glam-rock icons in the 1970s.
